Our Verdicts

🏆
Best for Daily Commutes
Waymo is the clear winner for anyone looking to replace their daily Uber or Lyft. Fully driverless, available 24/7, operating in 4 major cities, and backed by the most real-world miles of any competitor. If you're in San Francisco, Phoenix, LA, or Austin — start here.

Widest Geographic Reach
Tesla FSD technically operates in the most locations since any Tesla owner with FSD can use it anywhere. But it still requires an attentive driver, which is a significant caveat. Worth watching as the Cybercab robotaxi program develops.

🔮
Most Interesting Design
Zoox built a purpose-designed vehicle unlike anything else on the road — a bidirectional pod where passengers face each other. Not yet public, but once it is, it could redefine the robotaxi experience. Amazon-backed and well-funded.

📈
One to Watch
Wayve takes a fundamentally different approach — training large AI models on diverse driving data rather than hand-coding rules. Backed by Microsoft and NVIDIA, it's gaining traction as a technology licensor to major automakers. Early days, but potentially disruptive.

Choosing a Robotaxi: What to Consider

Is it available in your city?

Right now, Waymo is the only company offering fully autonomous rides to the general public in multiple cities. If you're not in San Francisco, Phoenix, LA, or Austin, you may have limited options.

Is it truly driverless?

Only Waymo currently operates fully driverless rides for the public. Tesla FSD still requires an attentive human driver. This distinction matters for both the experience and the safety record.

What does the safety record look like?

We track all publicly reported incidents on our Incident Tracker. Waymo's incident rate per mile compares favorably to human drivers, though incidents do still occur. Cruise had a serious incident in 2023 that led to a pause in operations.

What do real riders say?

Our reviews section aggregates real rider experiences. The most consistent feedback: robotaxis drive defensively, sometimes too cautiously, but rarely make the aggressive moves that lead to accidents with human drivers.
